Le expérience de Shahnawaz

Composer avec la stigmatisation du vitiligo

Diagnosed with vitiligo at the age of six, Shahnawaz has been living with the condition for over 18 years.  Growing up in Kingston, Ontario, where accessing specialized dermatology was challenging, he and his family regularly made three-hour drives to Toronto and even traveled to the U.S., for the care he needed, shaping his early years.

Despite trying multiple treatments, nothing led to lasting improvement. By age 11, his pigment had faded entirely, bringing feelings of isolation, helplessness, and confusion about why his skin was different. The emotional toll wasn’t always easy to articulate, especially as a child navigating a rare condition in a world that often didn’t understand it.

Shahnawaz’s experience with his dermatologist was profound. During each visit, he was met with warmth, humour, and genuine compassion. His dermatologist’s supportive and empathetic approach helped ease his anxiety and made him feel safe. The relationship left a lasting impact.

Today, Shahnawaz is a second-year medical student at McMaster University and is deeply committed to advocating for people with rare skin conditions. His lived experience shaped both his career path and his belief that treating skin means treating the whole person. In 2023, he co-founded Vitiligo Voices Canada, the country’s first support group for people with vitiligo. Through storytelling campaigns, monthly virtual meetups, and educational resources, the group is building a national community where people with vitiligo feel seen, supported, and empowered to share their journeys.
